Athena's Scottish Athletic Competition drew 46 athletes -- 31 men and 15 women -- who vied for top honors by competing in six athletic events. The competition began at noon on Saturday and took place over the next several hours in the practice field of the high school, directly across Fifth Street from the Caledonian Food Court.
The six events in the men's competition include the following:
Braemar (throwing a 22-pound rock off your shoulder with one hand)
Heavy Weight for Distance (HWD -- tossing a 42-pound weight attached to a chain)
Light Hammer (tossing a 16-pound weight attached to a long wooden handle)
Weight Over Bar (WOB -- tossing a 42-pound weight over a crossbar above your head)
Sheaf Toss (tossing a 16-pound sack of hay over a crossbar with a pitchfork)
Caber Toss (pick up and throw a long, heavy pole so that the end you touched lands directly away from you at the 12:00 position)
The women's competition is similar, but the weights are different.
Braemar: 13 pounds HWD: 14 pounds LH: 12 pounds
WOB: 21 pounds Sheaf Toss: 10 pounds Caber Toss: (smaller than a men's caber)
